  Last year there were lots of these on the Road Reserve but they were destroyed - old style thinking that "toadstools" need to be gotten rid of. I found this single survivor further up the road. It appears on the Fungi Oz site as an unidentified Australian Russula.

  There is a two week time gap between these photos. The first two photos were taken originally the second two a fortnight later. There is a subtle colour differentiation in the stem but you can clearly see the white stem of the fungi on the left and then the orange of the stem on the right of the second photo. As the fungi aged the gills darkened - originally they were cream as can be seen on the left side of the third photo. The Road Reserve still has quite a bit of remnant vegetation. The property slopes down to what would have been a natural gully and now is a drainage challenge for the Council, most properties have a drain through them on the lower side.

  There was a group of these (over six) feeding on a flowering arbutus (Irish Strawberry Tree). I managed to capture 2 at once (first photo).

  Locally rare species. Similar to Swamp Gum but with rough bark over most of the tree except the smaller branches (<10cm diameter). Smaller leaves and fruits than swamp gum and buds with distinct pedicel.

  1. David Francis  Hi Matthew, Stalk and underside of cap required for identification. Spore colour is also used in ids.
