Chris Lindorff Very nice find Luke. Was expecting more obvious fimbriate petals, but perhaps other characters point you to this taxa. Were the plants rather tall? How wide were the leaves?
-
-
Luke Steenhuis Chris, after going over the I.D. info again I can't positively say that it is Arthropodium sp. 1 - robust glaucous. It could be A. milleflorum. I have therefore put it under Arthropodium spp. for the time being. Is that O.K.?
-
-
-
Chris Lindorff This is up to you. I not familiar with the taller glaucous version and it may well be it. Other photos i have seen show more fimbriate petals. Location is good though.

Lorraine Phelan Stypandra glauca species id suggested
-
-
Luke Steenhuis Thanks Lorraine. I'm still not sure with your I.D. I have photographed several S. glauca and none exhibit the traits of this one. I am more inclined to think that it is a Dianella species and after spending time comparing the different Dianella members, I can only come to the conclusion that it is a very healthy and vigorous D. tasmanica. Please see the third image uploaded in this set for the typical Dianella basal leaf structure which varies quite a bit to Stypandra; which has only sparse leaves around the base. The habitat (sheltered, damp forest) and 1300m elevation also do not match S. glauca's preference. I have added a fourth image which shows the serrated margin of the leaves as highlighted by VicFlora for D. tasminica (see the lower leaf on the extra image).
-
-
Lorraine Phelan Tricky business, isn't it? But fun.
-
-
Luke Steenhuis I agree. It's a great way to get out and experience nature at it's best. I'm often envious of your wonderful photos.
-
-
Lorraine Phelan Thankyou, but I'm often puzzled when I look at the computer screen and wish I'd photographed the leaf junction or the sepals or some other vital identification point.

Luke Steenhuis Thanks Cathy. I'm glad you said that. I was just about to delete with the thinking that it was a bit sub-standard but conveniently lost internet connection just as was about to press delete. It was a real thrill. Pity the sound didn't come out as it should have. I was in full view of them but they took no notice.

David Francis Hi Luke, Do you have other photos showing the number, shape and size of the leaflets? I'm trying to get my head around the differences between C. leptophylla and C. microphylla
-
-
Luke Steenhuis Two additional photos of the same plant have been uploaded. Yes, I had a bit of trouble as well. I could be wrong. Any assistance will be appreciated.
-
-
Chris Lindorff Nice photos Luke. I think this looks good for Clematis leptophylla.

David Francis Great to have a photo of the Gippsland form of this rare Grevillea. Compare with the Brisbane Ranges form (https://natureshare.org.au/observations?species=Grevillea+chrysophaea)

Luke Steenhuis I was actually quite disappointed (after being excited) on seeing the actual flowers as they were very sparse on the plant and hard to spot. Also very fragile but they came up better than expected on the photo.

-
David Francis Well spotted. As you say, rarely recored in Victoria. An interesting plant (a bladderwort) that is said to capture organisms in its bladders.
-
-
Luke Steenhuis ALA has a record in the area from 2007 but that was about 5km in a direct line from this sighting. These photos are from 2016. It should be flowering again in the next week or so. I will be keen to go back and check them out again and see if there are any more likely dams in the area.

Verbena spp. Verbena
15 Feb 2017 • -37.2,146.5 • Luke Steenhuis
-
David Francis I think I can see dissected leaves at the bottom left of the middle photo which agrees with Verbena officinalis. Flowers, stems and habit look good for this species too. Inflorescence superficially like the unrelated Euphrasia spp.
-
-
Luke Steenhuis Thanks David, should I change the title? Special credit to my sister, Anne, who matched the observation to the species.
-

David Francis Yes, it's a good match, so make the change. Your sister did very well to make that id. It would have had me scratching my head!

-
Luke Steenhuis Have added two additional images.
-
-
Luke Steenhuis Maybe Olearia aff. Ramulosa (Omeo). Vicflora says found at Omeo and Licola 700m - 1400m. This one was definitely a bit higher at 1600m.
-
-
David Francis Doesn't look like Olearia ramulosa or even Olearia. The Daisy family is huge and difficult. Identification often relies on microscopic examination to nail it. The fine detail of the stems and leaves are often more important than the flower. Are you able to get an extreme close-up of the stem, leaf and base of the flower-head? Someone who is familiar with the species may be able to suggest the id from the general appearance.
-
-
Luke Steenhuis Thanks David. These are the only images I have. I have deleted the suggested ID. I hope that deletes it from the record image.
-
-
David Francis Yes, it is now "unidentified". It's a beautiful plant we will investigate further.
-
-
-
-
Luke Steenhuis Have found and added two more images.
-
-
David Francis Those new images are looking a bit more like O. ramulosa so maybe your are right.
-
-
David Francis It looks close enough to be match, so I think you should restore your original id. (Olearia aff. ramulosa (Omeo). This is a rare plant and a great observation! Sorry for the confusion.

Luke Steenhuis Thanks again David. Being just an amateur wildflower sleuth I am never completely sure of my opinion. On this occasion I spent a good two or more hours looking through all the reference sites and changed my mind several times. Am finding it a fascinating hobby though. I was thrilled when I saw this species confirmed by ALA as existing almost exactly where I saw it.
