Usually a mat-forming low shrub to 50 cm high.
Leaves 5–18 mm long, 0.6–3 mm wide, sharply pointed a tip, lower surface usually paler; margins toothed.
Flowers bright red, tubular, often hidden by the foliage.
Small sweet-tasting green-black berries.

These mating hoverflies were perfectly still, allowing me to focus accurately on them.
Note that the lower hoverfly, presumably the female, is not using her wings. Amazing that one set of wings can support the two individuals.
