Thanks to Martin Lagerwey for ID confirmation. His comments: Mainly Victorian beetle is nocturnal and each observation that I have made was under bark. Light trapping is a good way to encounter one. The color of the eight dots can be red or orange or yellow but otherwise they do not vary much.
This tiny insect is no more than 2mm long. Amongst all the other bugs on the sheet, it stood out because of its shape. Thanks to Ken Walker (Museums Victoria) for the genus ID. Evidently the specific species ID requires genetalia examination (far beyond my skill set!)
