About 35mm wingspan. Several of these frolicking in the grasses of a local orchid reserve. Some were darker and bluer than others. Two specimens here - one was chasing the other.

This name is mis-spelled on ALA as C hyacinthinus instead of C hyacinthina ??
Lots on a Cherry Ballart (Exocarpos cupressiformis). I notice there are a few pics on the internet of this species on Exocarpos species. They are adept at hiding, by moving to the other side of the twig/branch they are on.
A large, noisy fly which stay within a metre of ground level so I let one settle on my steel capped boot. About 19mm long. Couldn't bite through the boot.

This big bird was sitting in our birdbath. It has been identified by Albert Golden as a Collared Sparrowhawk. He commented that the long middle toe and 'goggle' eyes identified it as such. It would have been sitting (as in the first photo) for at least 5 minutes while we were watching. It did look at me standing in the doorway with the camera, but appeared unperturbed. It then flew to a nearby tree (scattering little birds in all directions), then flew back to the birdbath, where it sat on the lip for another 5 minutes or thereabouts before flying away.
