Poor photo but a new species record for Riddells Creek. Seen briefly as it took off and flew behind trees on a grassland rail reserve. It was solitary and seemed very large. ID help from Chris Lindorff.
Male. 2nd pic shows typical upside-down foraging position while searching for insects. Group of about a dozen birds. This seems to be one of the most eastern records for Race pileata. See female in 9022.
Family group of approx. 7 individuals. Differentiated from magpies and currawongs by (1) lack of visible white on the body when wings folded and (2) presence of large white patch outer half underside of wings.
